Arabic Words & Phrases:
Literary Arabic,
the ancient language of the Koran, has been formalized
today to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)
which is the language all Arabs
understand. Thus Newspapers and News Broadcasts can be
understood by those who speak and communicate in
Arabic. However, different parts of the Arab World have
distinct dialects.
Jordanians place great importance upon greetings,
civilities and inquiries into each other's health.
Always try to greet someone in Arabic before asking them
a question. Often a greeting will be accompanied by a
handshake or kiss on both sides of the cheeks if your
host is especially pleased to see you.
Jordanians are also masters of the art
of Gesticulation. One of the most common is an
outstretched hand and a flick of the wrist, which means
"What Do You Want?" Another
common one is raised eyebrows and a slight back throw of
the head which means "NO."
